Garret Durst is passionate about one thing, the Miami Hurricanes. He says his dream job would be to announce football games for the ‘Canes or the “U,” he says.  “I love everything about them, showboating, the dancing after scoring, and especially throwing up the “U” sign.”

Garret, 22, is a senior broadcasting major at the University at Nebraska-Lincoln. Born in Lincoln, he grew to love sports as a gymnast in high school. This led him to come to the University; he got scholarship offers from Iowa, Illinois, and Nebraska.

“I choose Nebraska because it is just closer to home and the other schools are just too far away,” he said.

Garret wanted to be close to his mom and his two dogs.  “I love my two dogs to death and I just like being close to my mom and the rest of my family,” Garret added.

Garret no longer competes on the rings in gymnastics. His athletic career was cut short by a car accident in August of 2009, a collision that put him in a coma for 10 days.

The crash kept him out of school for a semester, but his athletic fitness helped him get back on his feet. “I am truly blessed to be alive and to have recovered that fast from the accident,” he said.

One career might have ended for Garret, but his love for sports still loves on. He wants to have a job in the industry one day.
