A crossing route rarely leads to glory, but one slant route across the middle allowed Brandon Hubert to live his childhood dream.
The South Dakota State wide receiver snagged the first pass of the game for a nine-yard reception. The cheers of his family and friends, odds are, could be heard all the way back in Hubert’s hometown of Gretna.
Every boy in Nebraska spends more time dreaming of catching touchdowns amid the Sea of Red. Hubert made that fantasy come true, but he never anticipated it would be in the blue and yellow of South Dakota State.
“As a Nebraska kid, everybody grows up wanting to play for the Huskers,” Hubert said. “It was kind of fun to play in that environment.”
Hubert finished the game with two catches for 15 yards, but the redshirt freshman admits he was thrilled to just help the Jackrabbits earn a first down.
“It was kind of an adrenaline rush,” Hubert said. “First series, I picked up a first down, kept the drive going and came out there ready to compete.”
