Parents looking for a break from the hassel of the local pool or waterpark have found an increasingly popular alternative at Trago Park.
The water playground at 22nd and U Street opened in August of 2008 and is free to the public. It’s open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. until Labor Day and is one of two “sprayparks” in Lincoln. The other, Woods Sprayground at South 33rd and J Street, charges for admission.
The free fun and heightened safety are two of Trago’s greatest benefits, and they’re the main reason why the YMCA had an outing at the park on Wednesday instead of going to the Lincoln Children’s Zoo or other pools.
City officials like the prices, too, and Lincoln’s Parks and Recreation department has recommended many more be built around town in future years. According to a recent Lincoln Journal Star story, Trago Park costs only $7,000 to $10,000 a year to run, compared to as much as $40,000 for a traditional neighborhood pool.
