NatGeo digital media exec speaks to NewsNetNebraska

Susan Poulton, vice president of digital media for National Geographic has a passion.  It’s making sure National Geographic keeps its social networking audience growing and logged on. Speaking to NewsNetNebraska students at UNL’s College of Journalism and Mass Communication this week, Poulton explained effective ways to use social networking websites.


Poulton said National Geographic has the third largest Facebook following in the world with more than 7.5 million followers. Many of those new Facebook friends are older people who have adopted Facebook within the past few years.  Poulton said not all social networking sites though are good for all organizations.  Organizations, she said, should pick and choose the best social networking mix based on what works best for their audiences.


Poulton also discussed upcoming projects and opportunities for National Geographic,  including the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. Such projects allow National Geographic to draw bigger audiences to it’s programming- by using Facebook to promote on-going coverage of projects, YouTube to post National Geographic video and Twitter to update audience members with tweets on real time explorations being covered live by National Geographic teams.
