He may not be playing the game, but he is not ready to leave the sport.

Richard Charles “RC” Hansen, a 23-year-old senior broadcasting major, is ready to turn his love for sports into a career. Hansen wants to be a play-by-play announcer or a sideline reporter for ESPN. Hansen grew up in Elkhorn, Neb., where he found his passion for baseball at a young age. He played while he was young and then quit, but his love for the sport never ended. Hansen said he understands the sport and loves being able to explain it to others.

Nebraska was his top choice for college, he said. Hansen chose the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he initially majored in construction management.

“It didn’t feel right,” he said.

Hansen started taking random classes and considered broadcasting after a couple of years.

“I don’t know how it happened,” Hansen said.

Hansen said he enjoys video the best because it gives the audience the option to better understand things that are overlooked. This summer, Hansen is interning at Channel 8 News.

“I am mainly editing but I did do some highlight shooting for the Lincoln Salt Dogs,” he said.

Hansen graduates in May 2013. He hopes to find a job in the Midwest but understands he will end up where the job takes him.

“Nebraska is a state where I would like to stay if I can,” Hansen said.
