Bio: Brenda Council is the incumbent senator for District 11. She was born and raised in Omaha, Neb., and attended Omaha Central High School. Council graduated in 1974 from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She earned a law degree from Creighton University in 1977.

Council served on the Omaha School Board and Omaha City Council before her election to the Senate. She ran for mayor of Omaha in 1994 and 1997, but she lost both elections by slim margins. She is the former western regional president of National Caucus of Black School Board Members. Council was elected to the Legislature in 2008, filling a seat vacated by Ernie Chambers due to term limits. In September, she pleaded guilty to a charge of filing false campaign reports, which prosecutors say concealed her misuse of $60,000 in campaign funds. Council acknowledged she’s being treated for a gambling addiction. She was fined $500 for the two misdemeanor charges.

Council is married to Otha Kenneth Council.
