A cool fall Monday paved the way for another great KRNU: Sessions as The Great American Desert performed in the studio.

The Great American Desert (formerly known as South of Lincoln) is the moniker for the stifle-voiced folk singer-songwriter and guitarist, Max Holmquist, who was in Lincoln promoting his new album, “Carson City,” and his 8 p.m. Oct. 9 at The Bourbon Theater for Lincoln Calling.

Holmquist has been a solo act since 2006, and in 2009, he self-released his first album, “Homes.” In the fall of 2011, Holmquist released his second album, “The Monsters/Bathroom Sessions,” and a year later, he released his most recent album, “Carson City.”

“‘Carson City’ is a lot of story telling of timeless tales of heartbreak, loss and alcoholism,” Holmquist said.

On Monday, KRNU listeners got a preview of what’s sure to be a great show at the Bourbon Theater. Holmquist played four songs: “Bed sheets,” “Brother,” “Yellow Flags” and “The Flood,” all from “Carson City.”

Holmquist also talked with KRNU: Sessions host, Joe Teplitsky, about what he’s been up to, his influences and how he got to where he is.

“I’m from a small town of around 200 people,” Holmquist said. “A lot of the people are a little older. That place definitely influences the way I write music.”

Holmquist looks to have a strong performance for Lincoln Calling, but is always looking forward to what’s next.

“I want to see all the Lincoln people,” Holmquist said. “It will be my last show in Lincoln for a while. I’ll be starting a new project soon.”

In addition to his performance tonight at the Bourbon, listeners and fans can find more information about The Great American Desert on his website, and can also follow him on Twitter @GreatAmDesert.

The next KRNU: Sessions will take place Saturday, Oct. 13 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday’s installment will feature Lucy Michelle and the Velvet Lapelles.
