Demetria Stephens grew up enjoying the sights and sounds of her family-owned farm near Jennings, Kan. There wasn’t a lot to do in a town of 100 people, so Stephens developed a love for nature and documenting the world around her.
Her love for the natural world initially led her to pursue an art degree at a small community college, but art didn’t satisfy another passion – learning.
The 23-year-old Stephens left community college for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She’s now pursuing a journalism degree to satisfy a thirst for knowledge.
“Journalism allows you to cover important points and get away with not being a smart academic person,” said Stephens.
Stephens still maintains a close connection with nature. She likes to keep and grow plants, and takes photography classes to satisfy her creative itch. She said she’s most experienced photographing nature, but is getting more and more comfortable with other forms of photography.
Stephens hopes to return to Kansas after graduation and pursue a career in journalism or be an organic inspector, ensuring farmers aren’t using illegal chemicals and farm employees have good working conditions.
“Either way, I’ll be happy.”
