Men, hide those checkbooks where your women won’t look because it’s official, the brand new Nebraska Crossing Outlets mall in Gretna is now open to the public.

City leaders and the developer, Rodney Yates, gathered Friday morning to cut the ribbon and welcome the public to the facility. To celebrate the grand opening, numerous prizes are being given away.

The opening brought in thousands of shoppers, a female dominated population, who formed lines going into the mall and going into the stores all day long on Friday.

Some shoppers, like Vickie Humbert, came as early as 6:30 am to stand in line for their favorite store. The cold morning air didn’t seem to damper her anticipation for the store one bit.

“This is a special day, so it could have been blowing snow and I’d still be out here in line,” said Humbert.

Not only were the stores hard to get into because of the vast amount of people, but also a parking spot was even harder to come by. When asked, the majority of shoppers said it took them anywhere between 15-25 minutes to find a spot. Sherri Hamel said after she circled the parking lots multiple times, she ended up just parking on a curb somewhere.

“It’s just packed, so everyone is parking where ever they can, even if it’s not really a parking spot,” said Hamel.

Once you found a place to park, all sorts of national name stores await you. Some of the dozens of stores that greeted customers include: Nike, Under Armour, Kate Spade and Banana Republic.

“About 90 percent of the center was ready for the grand opening and the Black Friday madness,” said Developer Rodney Yates of OTB Destination. “There are a few brands that won’t be ready in the center until January.”

In the New Year, brands like Old Navy and Famous Footwear will join the line-up.

Not only will this $100-million project bring more selection to shoppers of the area, but it will also bring with it many jobs for Nebraskans, said Yates.

“This new center will create about one thousand jobs,” said Yates. “That’s bigger than some towns in Nebraska.”

There is also talk about easing the parking problems by setting up a shuttle service that will run from Gretna to the mall said Yates. If we come across issues as time passes, we will take care of them. The center will just continue to get better from here said Yates.
