Irene Malzer and her family break away from the noisy crowds walking the streets of downtown Lincoln, Neb. Saturday afternoon to stop into A Novel Idea Bookstore.
“We recently found this store and we love coming in,” Malzer said.
As the Malzer family begins to browse the shelves stacked to the ceilings with books they are greeted by manager Katherine Bergstrom, as well as two friendly cats, Padric and Eddy, that roam the two-floor store.
“We typically come here on the weekends because we work during the week,” she said. “And my daughter is a ninth grader who just started really falling in love with books, so this is a perfect place for us to come and feel comfortable.”
A Novel Idea Bookstore’s collection of used, rare and out-of-print books is not the only thing that sets it apart from commercial chains. The unique charm and cozy, home-like ambiance that this local business strives to create is what keeps customers like Malzer and her family coming back.
“I love the quality of the selection, the helpful staff and how it’s set up. You really can find anything you are looking for here,” Malzer said. “Also it doesn’t smell like an old bookstore.”
To which Bergstrom replied with a chuckle,” Thank you so much. We actually try really hard to keep it smelling nice.”
