Daron Au was looking for something different to do on a weekend night. So he and his friends decided to check out the rollickin’ musical fare at Brewsky’s Blazin’ Pianos.
For a $5 cover charge and some enthusiasm, patrons of the Haymarket bar can enjoy a pair of piano players who put their own spin on popular songs. The performances draw the largest crowds on Saturday evenings, and the crowd is as diverse as the music itself.
For Au, Blazin’ Pianos was just the ticket.
“I’m from out of town, and I’ve never been here before,” Au said. “My friends love the pianos, and I love that it’s just in Lincoln.”
Au sat a table close enough to the stage to throw his song request cards on the pianos in the form of paper airplanes, which provided he and his friends with added entertainment.
“I’m from a really small town, and you learn fast that you have to make your own fun,” Au said.
The requests that came from Au’s table were a mix of country, 80s rock and rap. The players obliged most of his requests, with one or two exceptions.
“Metallica is my favorite band and I wish they would play more of them,” Au said. “I guess I’ll settle for “Barbie Girl” if they play that.”
Alas. The piano players did not satisfy Au’s request.
