UNL student creates opportunities beyond the classroom

Aspiring to be a sports caster, junior Parker Cyza has found a passion for play-by-play on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s radio station, KRNU and the Big Ten Network.

Cyza, 21, is the voice of Husker basketball and in the spring will broadcast baseball games at Hawks Field.

As a sports enthusiast, Cyza is finding his groove behind the microphone on game night. Classes have prepared him well, he said, but live play-by-play is the best practice.

“I still don’t know if I’m fully confident, the more I do it the better I’ll get,” he said. “At least I hope.”

Being from Alliance, Nebraska, a small town community, Cyza isn’t afraid of being on the air.

“I enjoy the lead up to a game. The preparation, the nerves. At first it was nerve racking but I have gotten into the flow of things,” Cyza said.

He prepares extensively before each game. He is given a pamphlet of game notes that he reviews thoroughly in the lead-up to the games.

“They are the bible to sports casters,” Cyza said.

Wrestling is a sport that Cyza isn’t fully comfortable casting yet. He said, he hopes that he can round his skill set for not only his future employment, but to make his family proud.
